Cleaning and Repairing Concrete and Brick Driveways

Clean & Repair Brick & Concrete Driveways

Cleaning and sealing a concrete or brick driveway can make it look almost new again!

In evaluating the condition of your drive, you may choose to rent or buy a power washer to clean the entire surface. If grease or oil stains still remain, soak up the offending substances with cat litter, fine sawdust, hydrated lime, or cement powder, and then brush away the residue. For older, persistent stains, try applying a commercial degreaser, emulsifier, or 1:4 bleach-water mixture. You may find that certain stains cannot be completely removed but can be significantly lightened.

At this point, you can seal hairline cracks in the surface of your concrete driveway with concrete-patching compound (applied using a caulking gun). For any blemish wider than 1/4 inch, widen the crack with a mason's hammer and cold chisel, sweep away the rubble, and trowel on concrete-patching compound. When the compound starts to set, use a wet trowel to smooth over the patch so it is even with the surrounding concrete. Moisten the patch throughout the week to ensure the concrete dries slowly.

After a thorough cleaning, removing deeper stains, and sealing cracks, you are now ready to coat your driveway with a translucent masonry sealer. Follow the manufacturer's directions for application to protect and seal the surface. This final step will help restore your driveway to it's original glory!

Gardening Tips

Prepare Your Yard and Garden for Winter

Prepare Your Yard and Garden for Winter
Prepare lawn and landscaping now and they will return healthy in the spring, and leave you with a neat, well tended yard through winter.
  • Lawn Although grass appears to stop growing in the fall, the roots are growing deeper to prepare for winter. Feeding the lawn will keep it winterized and strong thought the freezing winter.
  • Landscaping Walkways and patios can take a beating in cold weather. Shifts in temperature and humidity can cause concrete and brick to heave and settle unevely. Keeping them free of water build up and debris will reduce the chances of winter damage. Try adding a small gravel drainage channel next to a walkway, or fixing a gutter that drips onto steps.
  • Pools and Spas Having a professional pool cleaning company winterize you swimming pool is essential. Drain the water and cover pool to keep out leaves and animals. In winter, it is not uncommon for deer or other wildlife to walk over pool covers, so choose the strongest cover you can afford. Hot tubs and spas will be a welcome treat in the cold weather. Make sure the heater and pump are functioning properly. Water could freeze in the pump, pipes or hot tub itself, causing irreparable damage.

Paducah Area History

Paducah originally called Pekin began around 1815 as a mixed community of Native Americans and European settlers who were attracted to the spot due to its unique geographic features in that it was nested at the confluence of many waterways. Read More...

There are haunted places in Paducah, or so it is told. Known to most Paducah residents as the Cohen building, this important structure was built around 1865, probably for M. Livingston & Company. learn more.

Early Native Interaction
By Robin Komie
Chief Paduke, a Chickasaw Indian who had settled the land first, welcomed travelers of the Ohio and Tennessee rivers with open arms. Because of his hospitality, the travelers settled near Chief Paduke's counsel lodge across the creek.

Harmony reigned supreme between the white settlers and the Native Americans. Their cultures bloomed together, each taking bits and pieces from the other, and mixing them together to make a beautiful and accepting culture. Together, the two established a flourishing economy.

Harmony ensued until William Clark, the infamous half of the Lewis and Clark Expedition came with a title deed in hand, informing the settlers that he owned the land in which Pekin lay. Because the deed was issued by the United States Supreme Court, the settlers had no choice but to leave Pekin behind.

Clark didn't forget the previous settlers. After making the grid for his new town (which is still the same to this day), he decided change Pekin to Paducah, in honor of Chief Paduke. He invited the settlers to come back, but most decided to move on to settle elsewhere.
